Lawn Tennis - Head Coach Announcement
I am pleased to announce that Lee Childs has been appointed as the Head Coach of Lawn Tennis at Queen’s Club with effect from Monday 1 August 2011. |

Lee’s appointment is the culmination of a rigorous 4 month selection process. After a tremendous response to our advertisement with both high quality national and international applications, ten applicants were chosen for interview, all of whom provided good experience and capabilities. The final three went through two further rounds of interviews and on court sessions to demonstrate their level of ability when coaching both adult and juniors.
The interview panel included Toby Foxcroft, Steve Raphael, Jo Sinclair, Michelle Oldham and Andrew Stewart. The panel were very mindful that Queen’s Club and its membership is unique. It requires a very special individual preferably with a very strong playing pedigree, extremely good coaching skills, and a strong person who can work with the many personalities at Queen’s Club.
Lee’s appointment was based on meeting the criteria unique to Queen’s Club along with his very clear enthusiasm and passion for the game and our Club. He retired from the tour 3 years ago and is a former ATP & Davis Cup player. During his career he achieved an ATP singles world ranking of 251 and ranked at number 4 in the UK, behind the likes of Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski.
Whilst his playing record is by no means paramount in our decision (a good player does not necessarily make a good coach) Lee’s Wimbledon record is also impressive - registering one of his best wins by beating Nikolay Davydenko, currently the world number 27. Lee played in the men’s doubles, with James Auckland, also a member of the Queen’s coaching team, and proudly represented Great Britain at the Davis Cup from 2001 – 2006.
Prior to coming to Queen’s Club Lee worked as a professional coach at the prestigious Stoke Park Club where he gained invaluable experience in customer service and care.
Lee will continue to provide personal coaching to Members and will work closely with me to enhance the Club’s tennis activities and overall coaching programme. I am sure you will join me in congratulating Lee on his appointment and make the most of the knowledge and support he can give.
