We’ve made it to semi-finals day!
First up on Centre Court we had the British number 1 Jack Draper who was looking to make his first final here at Queen’s. On the other side of the net, Jiri Lehecka, the only player to have not dropped a set so far this week.
Lehecka got the break of serve in the opening game to give himself the early advantage. Making a fast start has been a pattern of his this week. Draper wasn’t able to cause much of a threat on the Czech’s serve, and subsequently Lehecka won the first set with that one break of serve, 6-4. The second set, conversely to the first where the Brit had 0 break points, saw Draper constantly pushing on Lehecka’s serve. The Czech saved 5 break points, but it was finally on the 6th that Draper converted and got his reward to win the set 6-4. Into the decider, both players were showing how much they wanted it, going bar for bar for power. Lehecka stayed calm and composed, despite the home crowd being largely against him, whilst Draper let his frustration get to him when Lehecka finally got the break he needed to go 6-5 and serve for the match. Lehecka booked his place in his first ATP final on grass with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 victory. To sum up how close this first semi-final was, the final points tally was Lehecka 92 to Draper 91.
Up next to compete for a spot in tomorrow’s final, we had Carlos Alcaraz who, following yesterday’s win against Arthur Rinderknech, is on the best winning streak of his career - yesterday being his 16th consecutive victory. His opponent was 37 year old Roberto Bautista Agut, who may have looked to the success of Tatjana Maria here for some veteran inspiration. There was plenty of red and yellow in the crowd for this all-Spanish match up.
As strong favourite, Carlos Alcaraz got the first break early on, which he successfully followed up with a hold of serve for 3-1. In true Alcaraz fashion, he finished the set 6-4 with a sublime volley at the net on set-point. Again in the second set, it was Alcaraz who got the advantage with a break followed by a hold to love for 4-2. This time, it was one of Alcaraz’s signature monster forehands on match point that sealed the win. Alcaraz makes his second final here at Queen’s, and his 5th consecutive final this season.
So our confirmed finalists are Jiri Lehecka and Carlos Alcaraz. The players will be out on Centre Court tomorrow at 2pm for the final!
