Kicking off a tremendous lineup of play on Centre Court on Day 2, we had Jiri Lehecka vs Alex De Minaur, who enters the tournament as the 5th seed. Lehecka got the perfect start, breaking his opponent’s serve in the first game of the match. There was some great net play from both players throughout the first set, but it was Lehecka often coming out on top. Lehecka didn’t concede a single break point, and as a result won the set 6-4. It was Lehecka who took the initiative again in the 2nd set as he broke De Minaur’s serve to get a 3-2 lead. Much like the 1st set, there were a lot of unforced errors from De Minaur and an unwavering confidence from Lehecka, who got the killer 2nd break to knock out the 5th seed in a 6-4, 6-2 win.
The second match inside the Andy Murray Arena was home favourite Jack Draper against Jenson Brooksby from the USA. Draper’s had a brilliant season, developing into a very consistent player and showing that he has the potential to compete with the really elite players on the tour. It was Draper who got the breakthrough in the first set, with a break of served followed by a strong hold to love to get the 5-3 advantage. Having got himself ahead, Draper wasn’t taking any chances and finished the set off 6-3 on Brooksby’s serve. The British number 1 then got himself an early break in the 2nd to go 2-0 up, and from there it was all pretty routine for Draper as he sealed the double break and cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
In a last minute change, the 5 time Grand Slam Champion, and 2023 Queen’s winner, Carlos Alcaraz was set to face lucky loser Adam Walton. Both players made a strong start in this one, and were moving each other all over the court. The real difference maker was Alcaraz’s forehand - it really is special when he lets that rip, and he just gives his opponent no chance. Alcaraz got the break to go 4-3 in the first set and held his serve for the remainder to win it 6-4. A really impressive showing from Walton meant that this remained a close contest until the end. However, unable to shake Alcaraz on his serve, the set went to a tie break, and it was in this moment that the Roland Garros champion showed his composure to come out the 7-4 winner and finish the match in straight sets. The crowd on Centre Court were treated to some delightful shots along the way, in true Alcaraz style.
Fresh off of his win on grass in Stuttgart on Sunday, Taylor Fritz made his first appearance of the 2025 Championships against Corentin Moutet in today’s final match. Fritz has got a really strong game on grass, Sunday’s title being his fourth on the surface. It was hard to separate the two in the first set and with 0 breaks of serve, we went to a tie break. It was Fritz who took the advantage, winning the breaker 7-5. The second set was an equally close battle, and once again it took a tie break to split the two. After saving a match point, it was this time Moutet who came out on top and took the match to a decider. Finally a break of serve! With momentum on his side off the back of that tie break win, Moutet took the advantage in the first game of the final set. At 5-4, Moutet was serving for the match when Fritz picked the opportune moment to break his opponent’s serve for the first time. Showing great fight, Moutet replied with another break of serve, and this time made no mistake when serving it out. Moutet came out the winner 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 in what has to go down as the best match of the day!
