Finals day in West London! The scene was perfect with the stands packed and the sun shining bright over the Andy Murray Arena. Following a week of fantastic, competitive matches, we were left with our final two. Entering the main draw as a lucky loser, Donna Vekic has had a tremendous week, playing some of her best tennis to reach the final here. Similarly, Emma Raducanu has looked to be reaching her highest level on the grass in her run to the final.
As the players came out the atmosphere was rocking, with the cheers naturally being in the Brit’s favour. It was the Croatian who made a near perfect start to the match though. Playing with so much power, speed and focus, Donna Vekic stormed through the first set to a scoreline of 6-0.
It was important for Raducanu to leave that first set behind her and reset if she was going to get back into this match. Stepping up to serve, the Brit finally got herself on the scoreboard, and the crowd were backing her all the way. Raducanu was now much more competitive, and it looked like she was going to take us into a third set when she clinched a second break of serve and stepped up to serve for the set with a 5-2 lead. Vekic, however, looked undeterred by the crowd and was not wavering. The Croatian clawed back two breaks of serve to level the set up once again. Raducanu’s back was right against the wall when she faced three Championship points on her serve, but she managed to hold out and take us into a tie break.
This was an extreme test of nerves and you could feel the tension on Centre Court. Vekic took control at the beginning of the tie break but it was a real tussle and all level at 5-5. Raducanu then saved yet another Championship point at 6-5. It was one too many though when she again faced another match point, and Donna Vekic was crowned Queen’s Champion, winning the tie break 8-6 to complete a straight sets victory!
It has been a sensational week of tennis here at The Queen’s Club, with the WTA attracting brilliant crowds, and surpassing the popularity of the event last year. We look forward now to the ATP500 beginning tomorrow!
